Hoosier Database of Native and Nonnative Speech for Children

We have developed a database of audio recordings of native and nonnative speakers of English.

Talkers: 28 speakers including four speakers each (2 females) from the following language backgrounds: English, Spanish, German, French, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean.

Materials: The speakers in this database were recorded reading words, sentences, and paragraphs in English that are appropriate for testing children. Each word, sentence or paragraph has been segmented into an individual wav file.

Perceptual data: We have perceptual data regarding the intelligibility of all the words and a subset of the sentences in the database as well as subjective ratings of comprehensibility and foreign-accent strength.

Access: All recordings are available to interested researchers (except for one German speaker). Recordings and related data can be accessed through SpeechBox.

Research support: The development of the database was supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (R21 DC010027)
